The metaverse, explained: what it is, and why tech companies love it
In an idealized metaverse, every single user shares a single virtual world, where items and property persist for everyone between online sessions. For technical reasons, though, many modern metaverse-like spaces end up splitting users into sharded servers where a small subset of users can interact. The metaverse isn’t fully in existence, but some platforms contain metaverse-like elements. Developers have pushed the boundaries of what a game is through hosting in-game events and creating virtual economies. Google’s expertise in technologies such as AR/VR, spatial computing, cloud, AI and machine learning and content creation positions it to play a significant role in the metaverse. Done right, metaverse technologies in the workplace could increase teleworker camaraderie, improve collaboration, speed up training, reduce the need for office space and make work a happier place in general.
